Johnson: ‘We’ll test before TCM return’

Steven Johnson has discussed his plans for the Gulf Western Oils Touring Car Masters series return to racing later this year, confirming that his Full Throttle Custom Garage / Team Johnson XD Falcon will hit the track prior to the next round.

Speaking to the Parked Up Podcast, Johnson confirmed plans to sneak in some valuable testing miles prior to the next stop on the TCM schedule, currently planned for a bumper double header event at The Bend Motorsport Park in October.

“The XD is prepared – it’s as prepared as it’s ever going to be! It’s been looked at, checked over half a dozen times since Sydney Motorsport Park,” Johnson said.

“We’ll definitely get out and do a test day or two. I’m going to try and get the XD out and do some running.

“I’d love to be able to do something crazy like take it to the Leyburn Sprints which is going to be up here in the next month or so – just do something different with it. Create a bit of interest, some social media presence, and get it back out there for people to see.”

Johnson was also asked about the chances of his son, Jett, getting a chance to drive the iconic Tru Blue Mk. III Falcon.

That came after the youngest of the driving Johnsons posted a sneaky video on his Instagram in a (failed) bid to get his old man to agree to a steer..

“He’d dearly love to have a drive of that car!” Steve said.

“I think it was a bit of a ploy to get me to say yes on camera but it didn’t work!

“We’ll see how he goes – if he wins a race in the Hyundai Excel I might give him a drive. He’s done the job in the TA2 but now it’s time to win some races in the Excel and then perhaps I’ll think about it!”

Johnson also confirmed that Jett could make his Bathurst debut in the TransAm Series this November, at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International.
