Ford reveals new Mustang GT3

Following the launch of its seventh-generation Mustang muscle car last week, Ford has revealed a GT3 version of its hero nameplate.

Announced earlier this year by the American manufacturer, Ford’s latest GT3 representative is the first to actually be developed by the company after Matech’s version of the GT and Mustang FR5000 more than a decade ago.

Powered by the Coyote 5.4-litre engine and built in partnership with Multimatic, the Mustang signals Ford’s return back to GT racing as a debut is planned at the 2024 24 Hours of Daytona ahead of a customer racing program.

The establishment of a small Ford Performance department in Australia as part of an expanded motorsport program from the Blue Oval has teased the possibility of a customer GT program encompassing GT3 and GT4 versions of the new Mustang.

Global Director of Ford Performance Mark Rushbrook has signalled Australia as a key market for its customer racing products.

“We’re racing Mustangs GT4s or selling and supporting Mustang GT4s and Mustang GT3s in the market and we hope to sell a lot of them there,” said Rushbrook.

“We also work with outside partners to put the proper support in place in terms of having parts and technical support, because it’s important to have it there local in each market to properly support customer racing.”

The Australian motorsport is comprised of Ford Performance SVE and Motorsport Manager Justin Capicchiano, Motorsport – Engineer Ford Performance Brendan McGinniskin and Product Communications Manager Ben Nightingale.

Details are still to emerge surrounding the specification of the upcoming Mustang GT3, but it is an exciting addition to the model line up.

The next round of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS is the three-hour event at The Bend Motorsport Park on October 21-23.
