Race 1 Delight for Hazelwood, Heartbreak for Boys

There was an immediate winner and loser in the opening race of the Trico Trans Am Series decider in Adelaide.

Front-row starters Todd Hazelwood and Jordan Boys charged towards the Senna Chicane off the rolling start, neither willing to blink.

The result? Both cars skating half out of control and getting airborne, but somehow making it out the other side.

Hazelwood kept his nose in front before, crucially, Boys was spun amid contact with Nathan Herne coming out of Turn 3.

Boys dropped to the rear of the field and just when the The Racing Academy appeared to be salvaging points, he was forced to retire his ailing #88 entry.

All the while, Hazelwood pressed on to take victory, staving off a stern challenge from James Moffat.

What that means in the title equation is Hazelwood is now 29 points clear of Moffat and 99 of Boys with just 100 left in play.

Behind Hazelwood and Moffat, Herne recovered to be a distant third on the road – although Hazelwood’s victory margin ended up blowing out to 6.2014s courtesy of a five-second penalty for the 2023 champion.

Jackson Rice survived the carnage to take fourth, ahead of Edan Thornburrow, Tim Brook, Ben Grice and Brad Gartner.

Tom Hayman made a sterling charge from 19th to ninth, while outright 10th went to Pro-Am ace Joshua Thomas.

Elliot Barbour had to settle for 13th having run towards the pointy end early before coming unstuck.

Hazelwood and Moffat will share the front row for Race 2, which is scheduled for tomorrow 9:20am local (9:50am AEDT) and will pay 40 points to the victor.

Sixty points will be on offer in the final race of the season, to be run at 11:50am local (12:20pm AEDT) on Sunday.
