An on-song Todd Hazelwood has set himself up for a championship-altering weekend after grabbing the Trico Pole Award at EVENTelec Race Queensland.

Entering Ipswich with a 41-point deficit to James Moffat, Hazelwood picked up where he left off to be the undoubted form man through practice today.

He then wasted no time in upping the ante come crunch time, with a Friday sweep on the line.

The 28-year-old banged in the first sub-71-second lap of the day for Trans Am on his first run to put more than a half-second on everyone in the field bar Nathan Herne in the opening portion of qualifying.

That afforded him and Herne the opportunity to park up until the closing stages of the 20-minute session as the afternoon sun lowered to facilitate conditions for a final flurry of flyers.

By that stage, Elliott Cleary had improved to be right on Herne’s tail, but try as they might, no one could leapfrog the top two.

Hazelwood’s last-ditch effort alone would have been good enough for first, but didn’t beat his initial 1m10.9383s.

So, 0.1220s was the difference, with Hazelwood and Herne to share the front row and Cleary starting third.

With series leader Moffat managing just ninth, the door is well and truly ajar for Hazelwood to make inroads.

Fellow title contenders James Golding and Jordan Boys will start fourth and sixth respectively, split by Edan Thornburrow.

Josh Thomas meanwhile reclaimed the mantle of fastest Pro-Am driver, qualifying outright 11th, completing a fine day for TFH Racing.

The opening Trico Trans Am race of the weekend will get underway at 11:40am tomorrow, with streaming on 7plus.
