Golding Takes Trico Trans Am Pole on Debut
Garry Rogers Motorsport’s James Golding has taken out the Trico Pole Award in his first attempt, winning out in a remarkably close session.
The top nine drivers were covered by just half a second, while there was just 0.2397s to cover the top five in of the series’ closest ever qualifying sessions. James Moffat led for the majority of the session from Elliot Barbour in second and a rotating list of drivers in third that included the likes of Jordan Boys, Nash Morris and eventually Golding.
After a flurry of mid-session pit stops and adjustments, the field headed back out and it was Golding who took the advantage. A stunning lap on his eighth attempt, vaulted the #31 to the top of the timesheets and narrowly clear of Moffat.
Boys improved late, along with Morris to take command of the second row on the grid. The fastest driver in Friday practice, Elliot Barbour, ended up fifth.
There were plenty of notable names deeper in the field, with Todd Hazelwood eighth, Edan Thornburrow in 10th, Tom Hayman in 11th and Tim Slade in 13th. Slade’s time was just one second away from pole but leaves him on the outside looking in at the top 10.
Chris Pappas will start from 14th and first of the Pro-Am drivers.
Race one commences at 12:35pm, live and free on 7plus and 7mate.
