CAMERON JOINS INTRIGUING TCR TITLE RACE
A sudden lift in form from the Valvoline Team GRM Peugeot of Aaron Cameron has added a new element to what has been an intriguing race to the 2023 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series title.
While most of the attention has been on the two HMO Customer Racing Hyundais, four runner-up finishes in Cameron’s last five races see the Victorian suddenly sit third in the TCR standings, only eight points behind Josh Buchan.
With only 30 points separating Buchan and series leader Bailey Sweeny, the race for 2023 glory can now swing in any of three directions – four if you consider Tony D’Alberto, 2022 series winner, who sits a further 45 points back from Cameron in fourth.

The lift in form since a somewhat disappointing round at Hi-Tec Oils Race Winton comes down to the 23-year-old’s lightened responsibilities at both Queensland and Sandown – with the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship not featuring on both occasions.
A sole focus on his performances behind the wheel of the impressive Peugeot 308 has played a big role in his consistent podium finishes, not having to adjust to two different cars each and every time he takes to the track.
Off the back of his recent form, Cameron was happy to find himself back in the title picture and looked forward to continuing to apply the pressure at race Sydney in November.
“Now that we are only doing one category per weekend, it has been extremely helpful,” Cameron said.
“The first three rounds it was hard to manage with both categories, the difference between the TCR cars and the S5000, and jumping from one to the other was tough.
“I was always having to adjust to the car again, at QR and Sandown we were the second fastest car, but now we just want to get that race win.
“We have been better, more consistent, and while the car pace is the same, I’ve been able to stay more consistent in the three races, and it’s brought up back into contention.
“We are pretty close to Josh in second now, with two more rounds to go hopefully we can be up there again and do something about it.
“It’s been great getting podiums, I think there have been chances to win races and we could have done things differently, which sucks because we really want to get up there and get that win.
“It’s always tough for us in Sydney, we have a love/hate relationship there, but the car pace is usually alright.
“The Kumho tyre changes a lot everywhere we go now, the world tour guys being there is a big benefit for us because I don’t feel like we could get it done against the Hyundai’s in this particular round in a straight fight.
“I look forward to the World Tour guys coming, it’s going to add another great element to this title race.”

Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series will next feature at Race Sydney on 3-4 November, and it will be the first of two Kumho TCR World Tour rounds down under.
