Clean-sweep for Hayman in near-perfect weekend

Tom Hayman continued his red-hot form in race four to complete a National Trans Am Series clean sweep at Queensland Raceway.

Once again leading from start to finish, Hayman crossed the line ahead of the impressive Pioneer DJ entry of Elliot Barbour and series leader, James Moffat.

in its usual fashion, the category experienced plenty of chaos in race four, with a late safety car intervention allowing for a two-lap sprint to the line after The Racing Academy’s Elliot Cleary had an issue and was forced to pull over on the side of the track on lap 13 of 22.

It was a double whammy for The Racing Academy after already losing their other driver, Cody Gillis just a couple of laps earlier after being forced to retire off the back of damage sustained in race three earlier on in the afternoon.

The double retirement opened the door for the two Garry Rogers Motorsport title contenders in Moffat and Lochie Dalton to fight for podium places.

Unlike the last round at Winton, Moffat was able to get the better of the Tasmanian after holding position in the dying stages to take third behind a brilliant Barbour, with Dalton having to settle for fourth.

Sydney Property Care’s Edan Thornburrow put in a solid performance to take fifth, making up more places than any other driver in the field to finish ahead of Total Parts Plus’ Tim Brook.

Finishing in seventh was series veteran, Mark Crutcher, who was one of the many drivers to recover from a spin when Cleary’s Mustang left treads of oil on the track shortly before the safety car was brought out.

All American Driveline’s Ben Grice was one of those unfortunate drivers who suffered from the spill, but was able to recover well, much like he did after a troubled rolling start that saw the Victorian absorb contact with The Tefol Group’s Nick Lange.

Hayman was thrilled to take the round win and hopes he can continue his form into the next round at Sandown.

“It has been a great weekend for our small team, to get a clean sweep is absolutely insane,” Hayman said post-race.

“Thank you to all my sponsors for getting us to the track and Elliot (Barbour) for pushing me all weekend, it’s been amazing.

“I feel like this weekend has brought me a lot of confidence, coming out of the gate fast has definitely helped me and hopefully we can back it up at Sandown and get ourselves closer in the title race.”

The conclusion of race four sees Hayman take the obvious round honours, with Barbour taking second ahead of the series leader, Moffat – who has extended his lead over Dalton.

The National Trans Am Series will next feature at Sandown Raceway on 8-10 September.
