Milestone for Pollicina as Super3 field heads to Bathurst
THE DUNLOP Super3 Series field will return to Mount Panorama this weekend – and at the same time celebrate a major milestone for one of the categories’ best.
Multiple class champion Jim Pollicina will become just the second driver in DS3 / V8 Touring Cars history to start 50 rounds when he starts his Holden Commodore VE in Bathurst this week.
Only Chris Smerdon has more round starts to his credit than the Sydneysider, who has been a staple in the category since 2015 – but made his debut more than a decade ago in 2011.
Bathurst represents the penultimate round of the Dunlop Super3 series as the title reaches a critical point in the ongoing battle between Bradley Vaughan and leader, Kai Allen.
The two are split by the smallest margin across any of the three tiers of Supercars competition this year.
Vaughan is coming off the back of a strong weekend at Sandown where he won the final race, the round overall and closed the margin to Allen’s Eggleston Motorsport Commodore following a wild weekend of racing at the Melbourne venue.
As a result, Allen is in front by just 54 points heading into Bathurst’s pair of races this weekend as part of the massive Repco Bathurst 1000 event.
The Super3 field will again run with the Dunlop Super2 grid with a 15-strong field set to do battle.
Reigning DS3 Bathurst polesitter Blake Fardell will be hoping for a similar result this time round, the New South Wales driver beating Nash Morris and Michael Anderson to pole in December last year.
The two races to conclude the 2021 season were won by Morris – who sealed the championship – and Reef McCarthy in a Ford sweep.
The Bathurst grid includes the 2022 season regulars, featuring six drivers representing for their home state.
Notably, Jason Gomersall’s Matt Stone Racing Ford Falcon will return following his heavy crash at the end of the Sandown weekend.
The Dunlop Super3 Series field will tackle two races at Mount Panorama this weekend – the first on Friday at 3:10pm and the second on Saturday, commencing at 4:00pm local time.
Practice, qualifying and both races will be shown live on Fox Sports 506, Kayo Sports with racing also shown live on the Seven Network this weekend.
