How a viral video turned a little-known Honda racer into an overnight star

Five years ago, Jordan Cox was the kid cutting laps in his bright red Honda Civic for fun.

Now, he’s amassed millions of online views and a cult-like following that’s put him on the grid with some of Australia’s best racing drivers in the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series as part of the SpeedSeries.

In 2017, the Rockdale driver headed to Mount Panorama to race on the support card of the Bathurst 12 Hour in the Improved Production car class.

Filled with a variety of turbocharged sixes, V8s and naturally-aspirated fours, the licorice allsorts grid had a flavour for everyone.

Few would have picked the Honda hatchback to steal the show.

There are some places at Mount Panorama where it’s widely believed you can’t pass. One of them is Skyline.

That didn’t stop Cox, who spectacularly fired his Honda down the inside of the two-ton Holden Commodore ahead of him to take the race lead.

It’s a move that sent the commentators into raptures, with footage of the pass amassing more than four million views.

Overnight, Cox became an internet sensation.

“I didn’t even have a Facebook page or Instagram,” Cox recounted, speaking with Wide World of Sports.

“I was getting private messages. I’m a fairly private guy. I don’t try to be out there. A mate said to me, ‘You’ve got to make it happen! You’ve got to make a page! I was like ‘bugger off! No!’.

“Anyway, a few weeks later they roped me into it and it blew me away just how many people genuinely were interested in my motorsport.

“I’ve got some YouTube videos from other races that I’ve put up and people were loving that. I thought ‘this is cool!’.

“It was cool to see people that genuinely had passion for racing and just wanted entertainment. I feel like those videos gave people entertainment.

“Dealing with it for the first six months was like ‘oh wow!’ because I’m just not that kind of guy.

“I definitely used that to my advantage and realised I could make a career out of it. It has its advantages for sponsors and supporters.”
