Two from two for Nathan Herne in Queensland

Nathan Herne has extended his Turtle Wax Trans Am Series lead by taking victory in Race 2 at Queensland Raceway as teammate Owen Kelly continued his recovery to finish third.

Herne led from pole in the Team Valvoline GRM Ford Mustang as a race-long battle for second began almost immediately when Boost Mobile Racing’s Brodie Kostecki snatched the place from Jett Johnson in the NAPA Auto Parts entry.

There was mid-pack chaos involving debutant Tom Heyman in the DiPrinzio Concreting Mustang, Nic Carroll’s Hogan Prestige Cars Dodge Challenger and the PBS Specialty Coatings Ford of Cody Burcher, who was taking avoiding action.

Carroll also visited pit lane as the Challenger was stuck in gear.

It was a thrilling battle for second as Johnson hurried Kostecki all race with the addition of GRM pair Lochie Dalton and Owen Kelly, still recovering from the opening corner clash yesterday.

Chris Pappas was in the thick of the action also as he spun twice in the newly liveried Wealth Rite Racing Mustang, the second after tangling with Hayman in avoidance of the Pacific Petroleum entry driven by Michael Rowell.

Johnson bided his time as he tried the outside of Turn 3, then the next lap the inside on Kostecki to successfully take second. On exit, the Boost Mobile Racing Chevrolet Camaro slowed dropping position to Dalton and Kelly, while Micale Cabinets supported Kyle Gurton was not far behind.

Title contender Brett Holdsworth also encountered trouble as he spun at Turn 5 and finished 15th in the TPS Group Ashley Seward Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro.

Herne maintained his advantage in front as Johnson ran away from the inter-team GRM battle developing between Dalton and Kelly, with the former series winner moving into third by the end.

Gurton, Kostecki, Ben Grice in the All American Driveline Ford Mustang, DJ Pioneer’s Elliot Barbour in the lead Chevrolet Camaro, Jon McCorkindale’s Dial Before You Dig entry and series contender Tim Brook completed the top 10.

The final race of the weekend for the penultimate round of the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series at Queensland Raceway is scheduled for 3:25pm AEST live on Stan Sport.
