Allen claims Townsville round via drama-filled second race

In wild second race of the third round of the Dunlop Super3 Series that was strewn with damaged cars, Kai Allen clamed Round 3 of the series and finished eleventh outright.

In the Eggleston Motorsport Holden Commodore VE, he had a tussle on his hands defending the Super3 lead from Brad Vaughan in the Anderson Motorsport Ford Falcon FG whilst mixing with several of the Super2 cars.

RESULTS: Race 2, Townsville

The scrape resolved when Vaughan went off the circuit. Allen then had Blake Fardell (Muscle Cars Warehouse VE) hard on his heels when the chequered flag emerged.

The race went to a time certain finish after two safety car periods for crashes involving Super2 cars.

Not all Super3 competitors survived, as Jarrad Danaher (FG) stopped near pit exit with the left front wheel collapsed, and Garry Hills (VE) limped back to the pits on the last lap with suspension damage.

In the meantime, Steve Page (Page Brothers VE) finished fourth ahead of Tony Auddino (Crusher Parts Falcon BF), Ray Hislop (Nulon FG) and the recovering Vaughan.

Then came Jason Gomersall (FG) ahead of the Commodores driven by James Masterton, Layton Barker and Jim Pollicina.

Allen won the Super3 round ahead of Fardell and Vaughan, while Chris Smerdon won the Super3 Cup Class over Ray Hislop and Jim Pollicina.

The next round of the series will see the Super3 and Super2 fields return to Sandown for the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint on 19 – 21 August.
