S5000 winner Golding returns to main-game drive
PERENNIAL S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship title contender James Golding will return to the Supercars Championship for the remainder of the 2022 season, confirming a drive with PremiAir Hire Racing.
The Victorian will slide aboard the Subway-backed car for the remainder of the weekend, commencing at this weekend’s Townsville 500.
Golding made his full-time Supercars debut in 2018 and spent two seasons driving for Garry Rogers Motorsport, prior to their withdrawal from the series at the end of the 2019 season.
He continued as a Bathurst 1000 co-driver with Team 18, while focussing full-time on leading GRMs S5000 campaign when the championship proper commenced in 2021.
Golding won the first S5000 feature race at Sandown in 2019 and was a contender throughout the two most recent Australian Drivers’ Championship seasons.
He finished fourth in the 2021 championship, third in the 2021 Tasman Series and was runner-up to Joey Mawson in the 2022 Gold Star.
He and Tim Macrow are the only two drivers to have started every S5000 race – championship or otherwise – since the series inception, while he has Six Gold Star race wins and four pole positions to his credit.

“S5000s are fast, challenging racing cars to drive and that makes them a great place to prepare for, or keep race-fit in between, Supercars competition. We’ve got no doubt James will be very competitive as a result.
“We know there is plenty of interest in Joey Mawson from the Supercars paddock as well – it’s a vote of confidence in the category that the teams are interested in talent emerging from S5000.”
