Owen Kelly extends title lead with Race 3 victory
After taking the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series lead following last night’s Race 2, Owen Kelly has extended the margin following Race 3 victory despite a remarkable charge from teammate Nathan Herne.
Herne scythed his way through the field from 21st on the grid to finish second behind teammate Kelly by 1.5s as All American Driveline’s Ben Grice took third.

It was a chaotic start to the race as Supercheap Auto’s Nash Morris and Lochie Dalton in the Up 2/11 Motorsport Mustang were among many to tangle off the start. Dalton speared into the pit wall, then across Turn 1 being missed by a majority of the field, while Morris was forced to retire due to the damage sustained to his Mustang.
The safety car was called, but Herne had already climbed to 13th before putting in a phenomenal performance to pass all but one of the entries in front.
Out front, Kelly was able to build an advantage while Herne fought back through the field and the gap was enough to hold off his teammate in the end.
After scoring his maiden podium in last night’s second race, Zach Bates took third for the round with fourth in the Sullivans/MBSFM Mustang as Brett Holdsworth completed a strong weekend in fifth driving the Breeze Holiday Park Ashley Seward Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro.
Jon McCorkindale battled in his Dial Before You Dig Mustang to seventh ahead of title contender Tim Brook in his Andrew Miedecke Ford Wall Racing exampleafter he also came from 15th.
Cody Burcher finished his weekend in eighth driving the PBS Specialty Coatings Mustang from Sydney Property Care’s Edan Thornburrow and Kyle Gurton in the Dream Racing Australia Ford.
Kelly holds a six-point advantage from Herne as the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series continues at Queensland Raceway on August 5-7.
