Mawson adds to Gold Star record book with night racing masterclass
JOEY MAWSON extended his championship lead, defeated a rival in hand-to-hand combat and added his name to the lengthy record books that document the history of the Australian Drivers’ Championship on a big Saturday night at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The ALABAR / Form 700 driver led from pole to beat out a racy Aaron Cameron in a Saturday night shootout under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park, a tension-riddled 12-lap thriller the first ever Gold Star race to be held under lights since the awards foundation in 1957.
Mawson won the jump from pole and led Golding and Cameron into Sydney Motorsport Park’s first corner, but the GRM pair had big plans to challenge their BRM rival.
Golding attacked early, however a broken steering arm early on slowed his charge.
After initially ceding second position to Cameron with a feisty bit of side-by-side racing, Golding ultimately slowed dramatically when the extent of the issues were made apparant to the Victorian driver.
He limped back to pit lane for the GRM team to effect repairs and get him back on track – though was ultimately classified a non-finisher.
Cameron assumed the role of challenger to Mawson and attacked the title leader relentlessly, the pair trading lap records in their battle for the win.
Cameron had several half-attempts at working his way past the leader but Mawson had an answer to every move Cameron had to offer, ultimately sneaking home by a car length to claim another win and extend his championship lead.
With Cameron second, Tim Macrow and Nathan Herne battled for the third step on the podium with the former edging home the latter – also by a car length.
Yet again Macrow managed to gain ground after a third-row qualifying performance, to entrench himself in second position overall.
Shae Davies finished a stout fifth in what was a challenging evening for the Versa Motorsport squad.
He took advantage of friendly fire between Cooper Webster and Blake Purdie at turn six on the opening lap, which cost both drivers significant time and caused damage to both.
Two races remain to determine the winner of Round 4 of the Australian Drivers Championship, with both to be shown live and ad-break free on Stan Sport this Sunday.
