Jon McCorkindale and Owen Kelly share the honours in practice at Sydney Motorsport Park

After improved performance at Bathurst Jon McCorkindale led the way in opening practice before title contender Owen Kelly took the second ahead of qualifying for Round 4 of the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Although interrupted by a red flag, McCorkindale finished atop of the timesheets in opening practice in the Dial Before You Dig Ford Mustang with a 1m 34.986s to lead the simila All American Driveline example of Ben Grice by 0.156s.

McCorkindale revealed following the Bathurst round he had enlisted gun engineer Adam De Borre to aid in suspension set up and it is obviously paying dividends.

Behind the two leading Mustangs, last year’s runner up Edan Thornburrow was third ahead of GRM’s Kelly and PBS Specialty Coatings rookie Cody Burcher.

In an impressive opening performance debutant Zach Bates placed sixth in the Sullivans Ford Mustang from current second in points Tim Brook in the Andrew Miedecke Ford entry, GRM driver Lochie Dalton, series leader Nathan Herne and Nash Morris rounded out the top 10 in his Supercheap Auto Mustang.

Improving upon his fourth in the opening session, Kelly also lowered the mark from the opening session to a 1m 34.592s to finish second practice 0.218s clear of teammate and series leader Herne, while his key title rival Brook was third.

Morris followed to lead Burcher, McCorkindale, Dalton, Grice, Dream Racing Australia’s Kyle Gurton and rookie Bates continued his strong early form to round out the top 10.
