Edan Thornburrow ready to race at home
Last year’s leading rookie Edan Thornburrow has experienced a challenging start to his Turtle Wax Trans Am Series season, but returning to his home circuit at Sydney Motorsport Park provides plenty of promise to turn 2022 around.
Currently ninth in the standings after finishing runner up last year, Thornburrow is eager to climb back up the ranks especially at his home circuit in front of supporters, fans and family.

“At a place like Sydney Motorsport Park, I learnt to drive there, I’ve logged 1000s of laps there and because it’s a local circuit we get the opportunity to test before the event,” said Thornburrow.
“Top five is always the aim, it’s hard to get there this year and there are so many drivers deserving to be there.
“I am confident we’ll go into a lot stronger that we have done previous.”
Not only is Thornburrow excited to race at home, but the element of racing under lights is an interesting prospect after getting a taste at last year’s event during practice.
“I think from a racing point of view it will definitely change things up a little bit,” Thornburrow explained.
“Sydney Motorsport Park at night is like running in the day anyway, the lighting is that good.”
Summarising how he has found this season so far, Thornburrow is impressed by the increased level of competition and is eager to push into the top five.
“Last year was designed to be the learning year and this season we were going to go in with the intentions of being up the front,” explained Thornburrow.
“It’s been evident that the frontrunners have the development and people to move forward whereas us as privateers don’t have the resources to push up. But all things considered, we’re one of the faster privateer teams, which is a positive though there is plenty of work to do to get up to those front running guys.
“There’s realistically there was six or seven of us that were competitive last year, but the top 15 are within a couple of seconds of each and really the positions are being divided by tenths whereas last year it was much larger.
“From a driving point of view the smallest of mistakes will put you down the grid tenfold compared to last year. I think in qualifying its crucial, but also in the races its key to be consistent and I think we found that.”
The Turtle Wax Trans Am Series features as part of the third round of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships at Sydney Motorsport Park on May 27-29, which is headlined by fellow Australian Racing Category the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series in addition to the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship and Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters s part of the SpeedSeries.
Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, the Australian Production Car Series, Radical Cup and the Australian Prototype Series complete a stacked program of categories.
