Bailey Sweeny Auto Action’s latest Young Gun

Recent Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series race winner Bailey Sweeny is the most recent Auto Action Young Gun, the long-time magazine’s regular feature highlighting this country’s next generation of stars.

Sweeny has been a revelation so far in this year’s series following a maiden podium during his debut event at Symmons Plains before enjoying a breakthrough event at Bathurst where he was the lead HMO Customer Racing entry consistently all weekend and recorded his first category victory.

Recalling the moment with Auto Action, Sweeny was as surprised as any by his victory at the Mountain as he continues to exceed expectations.

“Definitely not what I was expecting,” Sweeny told Auto Action.

“I was hoping for a few top 10s, not podiums and wins.

“It was a big moment when I got back and caught how excited the crew were as well.

“That was awesome.

“It’s a track I’d been to before; I got up to speed and then put it together towards the end of the weekend.

“It was there all weekend. I was actually blown away by the pace, to be honest.”

The lead rookie in the standings, Sweeny believes his driver improvement has been fast tracked contesting TCR.

“I’ve come a long way as a driver over the few rounds, but the car just wasn’t really there at Phillip Island,” reflected Sweeny.

“To finally have the car underneath me and be confident with the track … everything came together.

“The car is very easy to drive and the team has been mega. They have helped me out wherever they can and been nothing but helpful.”

His results this year so far has led to a change it aims for Sweeny as he targets more success.

“My expectations have definitely changed from the start of the year and, if luck goes our way, we’ll be going for the title,” he said.
