Yasser Shahin adds Asian sister series to racing schedule

Reigning Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS winner Yasser Shahin will expand his program in 2022 to the sister Asian series teaming with Audi Sport Asia to drive one of its X-Works-run R8 LMS GT3 Evo IIs.

Shahin has already taken a victory this season in Australia, pairing with regular local visitor and Audi ace Christopher Mies in a Melbourne Performance Centre run R8 LMS GT3 Evo II at Phillip Island, leaving the event leading the standings.

For his Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS campaign Shahin will be joined by Audi’s official regional driver Sandy Stuvik, who finished sixth outright in his previous attempt. Stuvik has since picked up two Thai Super Series titles for Audi.

The second entry will be piloted by David Pun and Shaun Thong.

“We are very excited to be back at Asia’s leading GT championship, with two very competitive Pro-Am entries,” said Alexander Blackie, Manager of Audi Sport Customer Racing Asia.

“With Audi Sport Asia drivers Sandy Stuvik and Shaun Thong partnering with two of the quickest Am drivers in the region in Yasser Shahin and David Pun, we have two well-balanced line-ups for the Asia debut of the Audi R8 LMS Evo II.”

The X-Works team has made only one previous start in Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS back at Fuji in 2019 and will therefore embark on its first full assault this season.

This weekend, Shahin will spearhead Audi Sport’s Intercontinental GT Challenge hopes in this weekend’s LIQUI MOLY Bathurst 12 Hour sharing a Melbourne Performance Centre R8 LMS GT3 Evo II with factory pilots Riccardo Feller and Marcus Winkelhock.

There will be no time to rest for Shahin as he makes his Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS debut the following weekend at Sepang on May 20-21.

A familiar face will join him as Triple Eight Race Engineering will field two entries, including one for Prince Jefri Ibrahim and Am Class winners IMAK Motorsport will race its Porsche 911 GT3-R as well.
