Nathan Herne completes Mountain sweep

Valvoline Team GRM’s Nathan Herne has taken the final Turtle Wax Trans Am Series race of the weekend to complete a clean-sweep at the Mountain and extend his lead in the title.

Paynter Dixon Wall Racing’s Tim Brook followed Herne home in each race as Owen Kelly in the Garry Rogers Motorsport Ford Mustang completed the race and round podium.

Herne led away through Turn 1 and up Mountain Straight continuing the narrative of the weekend as title rival Brook slotted in behind to lead Kelly.

Behind the top three, Jon McCorkindale was continuing his strong weekend, but had pressure from the Breeze Holiday Parks Chevrolet Camaro Brett Holdsworth.

Further back, All American Driveline driver Ben Grice and Nash Morris in the Supercheap Auto Ford Mustang had a battle starting at Forrest’s Elbow and side-by-side through The Chase, but it was the former who took the advantage.

A disappointing weekend for Kyle Gurton continued as his Dream Racing Australia Ford Mustang stopped at The Esses, causing a safety car period. Also, off was Cody Burcher at Forrest’s Elbow after an incident at Hell Corner involving Chris Pappas.

Gurton’s Mustang came back to life and he re-joined the field as the field restarted on lap 4.

Herne made a perfect restart to gap Brook as he led Kelly, McCorkindale, Holdsworth, Grice, Morris, Edan Thornburrow, Elliot Barbour and Hugh McAlister.

However, the race finished under safety car following an incident involving rookie John Holinger and Shaun Richardson on Conrod Straight, with the former emerging from his Chevrolet Camaro under his own power.

Therefore, Herne completes a clean-sweep in his Valvoline Team GRM Ford Mustang and extended his series lead to Paynter Dixon Wall Racing’s Tim Brook, who finished second as Kelly scored his second round podium in a row.

Just shy of the podium was McCorkindale in just his third race meeting from Holdsworth, Grice, Morris, Thornburrow, Barbour and McAlister.

Herne has extended his margin to 19-points from Brook in the title race as the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series next appears as part of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships at Sydney Motorsport Park on May 27-29.
