Constant improvement for Brett Holdsworth at the Island

A top five result for Brett Holdsworth proved a solid recovery from a lowly qualifying session in a wild weekend at Phillip Island for the second round of Turtle Wax Trans Am driving the TPS Group Chevrolet Camaro.

After an early red flag in qualifying failed to allow many drivers to complete a quick lap, the grid was set by the combined practice times leaving Holdsworth eighth. The Breeze Holiday Parks Camaro progressed in each race to ensure Holdsworth continues to be a factor in the title fight.

Slow starts in the opening two races put Holdsworth on the back foot early, however he was able to keep clear of any trouble to first finish seventh, then sixth in the second.

A lone ranger for the bow tie in the final race, Holdsworth was able to finish the weekend within the top five setting up a strong base for later in the season.

“It was a really awesome weekend fighting with everyone and I had some good battles out there, a few heated moments but that’s par for the course in Trans Am,” said Holdsworth.

“I’m happy but we just don’t have quite have the outright speed of the front runners; we need to sort that out because at the moment we’re not going to compete for anything better than fourth. We have to find where we’re losing grip and do the hard yards to figure that out.”

At one stage, Holdsworth was involved in a close skirmish with Ben Grice, but said there was no malice intended in any on-track altercation.

“Apologies to Gricey (Ben Grice) if I fed him wide, he was just in my blind sport and he’s the last person I want to push off the track, we normally get along really well,” Holdsworth said.

Holdsworth is sixth in the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series standings, 43 points behind leader Nathan Herne approaching the third round as support to the Hi-Tec Bathurst 6 Hour on April 15-17.

More than 70-entries have been received for this year’s Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour in what is the ultimate production car event, which is joined by the third round of the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia and Turtle Wax Trans Am Series, the MRF Tyres Australian Pulsar Racing Association, NSW Historic Touring Cars and NSW HQ Holdens.
