Miedecke prevails to claim maiden TCM win in Sydney
GEORGE MIEDECKE has prevailed in a wet and wild shootout to decide the opening round of the 2022 Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters Series at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Heavy overnight rain saw the circuit flooded on Sunday morning, forcing organisers to cancel the scheduled second race of the weekend while the circuit drained.
RESULTS: Race 2
That turned what would be the one and only race of the day into a winner-take-all showdown between the key TCM contenders.
Miedecke, driving for Whiteline Racing, launched his Camaro into the lead over John Bowe on the opening lap and was never headed – winning not only a race for the first time, but the round as well.
Sydney marked just his second ever TCM round as he joins an elite club of second generation racers to claim a Touring Car Masters race and round victory.
Miedecke’s well-known racing father, Andrew, was a perennial TCM contender with Whiteline Racing with George following firmly in his footsteps with the same team – though the sister Chevrolet Camaro.
Andrew was on site to see George’s win today.
While Miedecke powered away in front, a competitive battle behind decided the final steps on the podium for the weekend.
Having started from pole, Bowe slipped to sixth at the finish of the 10 lap race – one that was held on a drying circuit but on wet weather Hoosier tyres – meaning Miedecke claimed the round.
Ryan Hansford finished second in the race and for the weekend while Johnson was third in race two. Bowe completed the round podium.
The championship order reflects the round results with Miedecke the early season leader over Hansford and Bowe.
Hansford, Johnson, Bowe, Marcus Zukanovic and Jamie Tilley engaged in a race-long battle for the minors throughout the race with positions rapidly changing.
Cameron Mason finished seventh, Cameron Tilley eighth while Jim Pollicina and Andrew Fisher rounded out the top-10.
Jamie Tilley led home Cameron Tilley and Cameron Mason in the Pro-Am results for Round 1, while John Adams claimed Pro Sport.
