Miedecke returns to Touring Car Masters grid for Round 1
GEORGE MIEDECKE will continue his campaign in the Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters Series when he joins the field for a full-time tilt at the 2022 series, commencing at Sydney Motorsport Park next week.
Miedecke, who made an impressive TCM debut with Whiteline Racing at Mount Panorama late last year, will re join the team this year for a full-season campaign aboard one of the team’s ever-competitive Chevrolet Camaros.
He joins a competitive field assembled for the opening round of the 2022 series, filled with potential contenders to John Bowe’s crown.
Miedecke made headlines during his TCM debut at Bathurst, qualifying fourth while racing the same Chevrolet Camaro his dad, Andrew, raced for Whiteline.
He then finished second in the TCM trophy race and raced at the pointy-end of the grid in the championship races, despite a series of issues outside of his control costing him a chance at a debut victory.
Miedecke is one of several second-generation drivers on the grid with Cameron Mason (son of 2007 champion Steve) and Jamie Tilley (son of Brad) also returning this year.
Gerard McLeod, the son of 1987 Bathurst winner Peter, will return aboard his Holden VB Commodore. Ryan Hansford’s famous racing lineage also needs no introduction.
11 different models are represented in the Sydney entry list, which will see TCM tackle four races – one trophy race and three championship races – across the Sydney SuperNight event on March 4-6.
Along with expected title threat Miedecke, the 2022 grid sees the return of 10 former TCM race winners including multiple champions John Bowe and Steven Johnson and 2021 runner-up Hansford.
The Sydney field welcomes back Ben Dunn and his Chevrolet Monza, the car a former race winner in the category.
Former TCM class champion Leo Tobin also makes a welcome return for his first TCM start since the 2020 Adelaide 500.
Following his debut at the same venue in April last year, John Adams will make his second series start this weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park aboard the Falcon XY GTHO once driven by Tony Karanfilovski and Steven Johnson.
Meanwhile, the first Holden HQ Monaro GTS 350 to race in three years will see SNB Berryman Racing’s Warren Trewin make his debut in the category next weekend, having announced his plans to join the TCM ranks earlier this year.
The Gulf Western Oil TCM field will tackle practice and qualifying on Friday, with the Trophy Race and opening championship event of the season set for Saturday.
Sunday will then see a further pair of two races to complete the opening round.
