Opposites attract for Lachlan Mineeff

It’s a case of opposites for Lachlan Mineeff when comparing his equipment on-track to what surrounds him off it.

Mineeff juggles competing in his privateer Purple Sector Volkswagen Golf GTI in Supercheap Auto TCR Australia, with working full-time at his family-run business Southern Star Truck Centre.

Started more than three decades ago by his father, the Bowral truck dealership specialises in buying, selling and leasing used trucks across Australia.

“It’s my first year out of school and I’ve been working at the family business,” he explained.

“At the moment we do just sales, which includes buying and selling. For us, getting stock is the hardest part so we’re really keen to purchase trucks, trade-ins or sales and we’re also branching into long-term rentals, which my dad has been doing for the past 30 years.

“I’m really enjoying my time there and running a split role between that as well as continuing to find sponsorship for the race team has been a good challenge for me.”

Without a job title, Mineeff fulfils numerous roles throughout the business and employs acumen gained from these tasks into his racing program.

“The job role changes daily, but mainly it covers logistics of truck sales Australia wide, which I enjoy handling,” Mineeff explained.

“I’ve enjoyed being able to work in the family business and it teaches you a lot about the skills that you need to know to go motor racing. One of these is working out what exactly businesses need to make partnerships succeed in regards to sponsorship.”

Managing the company logistics provides a number of challenges for Mineeff, especially during these current times.

“COVID has made some things hard, but we’re very fortunate that transport is an essential service and whatever stage the world is in trucks will still be needed,” Mineeff emphasised.

“It’s kind of the backbone of everything at the moment.

“You’ve got to be organised and up to date with all the current restrictions and everything in place to abide by.”

While he hasn’t been able to visit DNA Autosport, which stores and prepares his Golf GTI TCR, Mineeff is confident of improved performances when Supercheap Auto TCR Australia restarts.

“The team at DNA have been learning a lot about the car from a technical standpoint, which is a definite advantage,” he said.

“I’ve been really grateful and fortunate for the opportunities I’ve received, so I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
