Tasman Series on track despite Gold Coast cancellation

The cancellation of the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 will not stop plans to run the S5000 Tasman Series later this year.

Originally scheduled to be the final in a two-round series following S5000s debut appearance at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International, the event in Surfers Paradise was today confirmed to be cancelled due to the ongoing safety and logistic concerns brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a lengthy construction lead-time, organisers have elected to postpone the popular event for the second consecutive year, with plans to return in 2022.

Despite the loss of the Gold Coast event, a replacement event will be announced shortly which ensures S5000 will continue to run a two-round, multi-race Tasman Series this year as both a stand-alone spectacle and a lead-in to the 2022 S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship.

The revised calendar will ensure that both the unique driving challenges and high profile nature of the original Tasman Series calendar will be maintained and even potentially enhanced.

Strong interest from current and potential competitors in the Tasman Series concept points to a strong grid of 560hp Rogers AF01/V8 racers later this year.

A $50,000 prize pool remains up for grabs for the series winners, including a cool $30,000 for the series champion.

Further calendar details will be announced in due course.
