Trans Am the perfect pathway for young gun Edan Thornburrow

Teenager Edan Thornburrow has been the surprise packet of this year’s National Trans Am Series and told Auto Action about his career so far.

The latest driver to feature as part of the longstanding magazine’s Young Guns series, Thornburrow admitted his third-place in the standings was unexpected.

“I had no expectations,” Thornburrow said. “I remember the first test day jumping into the Trans Am and it was like my eyes had opened going down the straight for the first time, it was insane.

“To be completely honest, the idea was to learn throughout this year, and then being third on top of that is just a huge bonus.

“With all the names that you’ve got in there, to be in the mix with the frontrunners is a great experience for me.”

The rookie has yet to finish on the podium this season, but consistency has been his key strength as he aims to close the gap to series frontrunners Aaron Seton and Nathan Herne.

Thornburrow didn’t follow the traditional pathway through karts and junior formulas, but when making the next step in his career National Trans Am proved an attractive proposition in a variety of areas.

“It had to be a category that was first of all cost effective,” Thornburrow explained.

“Second, it had to be a step up from what I was doing, and something that will give me the exposure to a wider audience of people.

“Trans Am just sort of fell into place. I really like where the category itself is going, and how ARG (Australian Racing Group) are promoting it through its events.

“It is an international category as well, you’ve got Trans Am in Asia, America, there’s pathways, it’s not just a closed end thing.”
