Erebus extends support to Super3 rookie

Having been recruited by Image Racing back in January, Erebus Academy is excited to announce a new partnership with Super3 driver, Reef McCarthy.

Primarily focusing on Formula Vee for the past three years, McCarthy has dominated within the category, with the 17-year-old already taking out two clean sweeps this year.

Naturally looking to progress in the sport, McCarthy was initially interested in making the switch to Toyota 86 or Formula Ford but after impressing Image Racing owner, Terry Wyhoon, he found himself fast tracked to Super3.

“Super3 is quite a big jump from Formula Vee,” McCarthy said.

“I was lucky that Terry offered me a run at Winton and from there I was given the opportunity to race with them this year so I went for it.

“We would have gone through Formula Ford or Toyota 86 if we didn’t get given this opportunity but I was lucky enough that the seat was there and I performed well on the test day.”

With the Winton SuperSprint postponed due to a Victorian lockdown, McCarthy is looking ahead to Townsville’s Reid Park Street Circuit.

“I was gutted to hear Winton was postponed as the team and myself were in such a positive mindset, ready for a big weekend of learning and hopefully good results,” he said.

“I felt confident that I was mentally and physically prepared for the weekend but now I am even hungrier for Townsville.

“I have never been to the Reid Park circuit but from what I have done on the sim and from the on boards I have watched, I am excited to give it a red hot crack.”

After a successful debut at Bathurst, McCarthy is continuing to learn the car and improve his technique as he works towards his ultimate goal of a main game seat.

“To end up in Supercars is definitely the goal, it’s been the dream pretty much since I was a little kid,” he said.

“I think it could slowly start to become a reality if I can keep progressing and performing well.

“I was very happy with how I went at Bathurst, I think I was able to show that I have the pace to hopefully compete up the front.”

Erebus Academy is thrilled to welcome McCarthy to the ranks and is looking forward to watching his progression in the sport.

“Reef has shown a lot of talent over the past couple of years and has proven he is capable of competing in the Super3 category,” Erebus CEO Barry Ryan said.

“With the support of Image Racing and the Erebus Academy, we can provide Reef with the knowledge and experience he needs to succeed.”

McCarthy will next hit the track for his Townsville debut on July 9-11.
