Jamie Whincup replaces injured SVG for Phillip Island

Shane van Gisbergen will miss the opening round of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS at Phillip Island next weekend after injuring his collarbone during a mountain biking accident this morning.

The champion New Zealander had a plate inserted during the routine procedure in Brisbane this afternoon and is recovering from successful surgery after the accident.

A statement from Triple Eight Race Engineering today said that the current Supercars Championship leader is recovering well.

The statement also said that while medically fit to compete at Phillip Island next weekend, the decision has been made to wait until the Sandown SuperSprint in two weeks to return to the wheel to allow more time for a smooth recovery.

Seven-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup will take his seat alongside His Highness Prince Jefri Ibrahim in the #888 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT3 Evo.
