Jon McCorkindale takes Super3 season opener at Bathurst

Jon McCorkindale has led from lights to flag to claim the opening race in the 2021 Dunlop Super3 Series at Mount Panorama.

Starting from pole position, the driver from Young in country New South Wales dominated the eight-lap affair to win the race by six seconds aboard his Dial Before Dig Ford Falcon.

After a lengthy pre-race – the field was forced to complete a second warm-up lap following a broken Super2 Series car – McCorkindale made a strong start to lead the 12-car Super3 grid into turn one.

He then built a comfortable margin to edge away from second-placed Blake Fardell across the duration.

Fardell finished second, his best ever Super3 Series result, while rookie Nash Morris finished third on his debut.

The Queenslander survived a wild moment at Forrest’s Elbow in the closing laps to hold out Brendan Strong to grab the final spot on the podium.

Strong also won the Super3 Cup category by just over eight seconds, with Michael Anderson and Jason Gomersall completing the class podium.

Strong and Anderson were split by Reef McCarthy, who was fourth of the championship cars home and fifth overall on his Super3 debut.

The Image Racing driver ran sixth for much of the race before catching and passing Anderson for a spot in the top five with two laps to go.

Ray Hislop, Jim Pollicina and Jason Foley completed the top-10, with Tony Auddino eleventh.

Steven Page failed to start the race in his Page Bros. Jayco Commodore.

The Dunlop Super3 Series field will tackle a second qualifying session and race tomorrow at Mount Panorama, to be broadcast live on Fox Sports, Kayo and Channel 7.
