SETON STARTS WITH SATURDAY SWEEP AT QR

AARON SETON has continued the trend of the 2019 Paynter Dixon Touring Car Masters series producing first-time race winners the third-generation racing talent storming to two victories in an emphatic Saturday sweep at Queensland Raceway.

After Cameron Mason became the third first-time winner of the season in Friday’s Dometic Trophy Race Seton added his name to the roster when he led the 10th championship race of the season from lights to flag on Saturday morning.

He backed that up with another win later in the afternoon to head into Sunday’s finale staring down a potential clean sweep at his home circuit.

Seton’s dominant performance came on a day where championship leader Steven Johnson had his worst result of the season; the Team Johnson Mustang failing on the Race 10 formation lap thanks to a fuel pump issue as the car left pit lane.

While he rebounded in the second race to charge from the back of the grid to seventh Johnson’s 114-point series lead was reduced to just 58 by the end of the challenging day.

However it was another famous racing surname taking all the limelight thanks to a pair of near-perfect drives out in front of the field.

“It’s great to be here thanks to Leo (Car owner Leo Tobin) for the opportunity to be here this weekend†Seton said.

“It’s a great car to drive. My dad and Chris have done a great job setting it up. We’ve been working on it since Winton and we’ve made a lot of changers and it’s really starting to feel good.â€Â

Race 10 saw Seton lead the pack into the first corner from pole position and promptly escape up the road.

The battling behind however was competitive with Ryal Harris John Bowe Adam Garwood and Ryan Hansford battling over the minors.

Harris looked to have sealed the spot before an upper control arm broke on the left-front corner of his EFS Camaro; the Queenslander remarkable able to limp the car home to sixth position – just – to score valuable points.

The beneficiary was Adam Garwood who climbed to second and John Bowe who was third. Hansford just missed the podium while Jim Pollicina scored another strong result in fifth: First of the Pro-Am class contenders.

Harris Rob Hackwood Adam Bressington Marcus Zukanovic and Jason Gomersall completed the 10.

Race 11 stared in similar circumstances with Seton nailing the rolling start and disappearing up the road.

Harris was the big mover however with his repaired Camaro storming from sixth to third and then second on the first lap with a flying start.

Behind him Hansford Bowe and Pollicina scrapped for the final spot on the podium: the all-Torana scrap ultimately going the way of Bowe Pollicina improving one to fourth position while Hansford slipped to fifth.

A consistent Adam Bressington made ground to sixth position while a charging Johnson climbed from 23rd to seventh at the line; including making up 10 spots on the opening lap. Hackwood Zukanovic and Mason completed the top-10.

The race was marred by an opening lap incident when contact at turn four resulted in Adam Garwood’s Whiteline Racing Camaro being turned around.

Collateral damage in the incident saw Ben Dunn hit the rear of Danny Buzadzic’s Torana as the field checked up and took evasive action. Garwood recovered to 12th position narrowly missing out on pipping Jason Gomersall to the line.

In one of the more remarkable stories of the day Allen Boughen recorded a pair of 16th placed finishes in his Mercury Comet following an all-night effort to rebuild the car following its hefty crash in Friday’s Dometic Trophy Race.

Steven Johnson’s day coupled with strong performances from his closest title rivals have closed the Paynter Dixon Touring Car Masters series standing up ahead of tomorrow’s 12th race of the championship.

Provisionally Johnson now leads Bowe by just 58 points Adam Bressington slipping to third position some 85 from the series lead.

Ryal Harris is fourth just three points behind his fellow Camaro driver while Jim Pollicina moves to fifth place and continues to lead the Pro-Am standings.

Race 12 of the 2019 championship will commence at 12:10pm on Sunday and will be shown live on FOX Sports 506 and Kayo Sports.
