BOWE SETS QUALY MILESTONE
AN INCREDIBLE last flying lap has secured John Bowe a milestone achievement in today’s qualifying session for the final round of the Touring Car Masters season at Sydney Olympic Park.
Bowe’s sub-record 1m35.384s flyer not only rocketed him to the top of the charts by six-tenths of a second with just two minutes remaining in the session it also saw the Wilson Security / Payce Holden Torana SL/R 5000 driver score his 100th professional career pole position.
The milestone effort – achieved across his open wheel Touring Car GT and TCM career – is a record amongst Australian drivers. Today’s effort was also the fifth of Bowe’s season and also the 45th of his TCM career.
Second in qualifying was Steven Johnson whose own impressive lap of 1m36.05s had him on provisional pole until Bowe’s last-ditch flyer.
Johnson’s own effort saw him edge out Glenn Seton by less than one-tenth of a second for a spot on the front row of the grid – Seton’s Thunder Road Racing Mustang taking several trips up the escape road in his efforts to hustle more time from his car.
Jason Gomersall was fourth lapping underneath the existing qualifying record and exactly one second from Bowe’s mighty lap – but only three-tenths from Seton and Johnson in front.
Local driver Adam Bressington will start race one fifth in the Whiteline Camaro edging out Tony Karanfilovski for the honour of best local after the Mustang driver jumped four spots on his final lap after the chequered flag had fallen.
Mark King Eddie Abelnica – in a repaired XB Falcon Coupe – Cameron Tilley and Jim Richards completed the top-10.
Wayne Mercer Brad Tilley Rusty French Leo Tobin and Darren Beale complete the order for this afternoon’s opening race set for 1:55pm (local time).
The race will be broadcast live on FOX Sports and Network Ten around Australia this afternoon.
