JOHNSON BEATS BOWE AT BATHURST

IN A BATTLE of famous Bathurst surnames Johnson has led home Bowe in the first of three races in round seven of the ENZED Touring Car Masters at Mount Panorama.

The Ford Mustang driver led from pole survived dramas at turn one and then powered away to victory following a safety car to record his 9th win from 10 starts to date this season.

Johnson also set a new TCM Bathurst lap record at 2m19.4587s on his final tour of the shortened five lap race one he ultimately won by two seconds.

The race commenced with dramas at turn one as Andrew Miedecke passed Eddie Abelnica up the inside of Hell corner.

As the Camaro was making the move and past the Falcon second-placed starter Glenn Seton swept across from the outside contacting Miedecke’s Camaro and spinning out of second place.

Miedecke suffered damage to his left front corner and was forced to pit for repairs while Seton was relegated to the back of the field.

The drama continued on the run up Mountain Straight as Jason Gomersall and Mark King briefly touched as the pair approached the famous ‘hump’ on the 1.1km long straight.

Gomersall’s iSeek Racing Torana subsequently fired off the road on the drivers’ right impacting the wall heavily on the right-front corner.

The driver emerged unscathed with the Matt Stone Racing outfit that prepares the car – led by veteran V8 Supercars team owner and engineer Jim Stone – immediately going to work on repairing the car in time for tomorrow’s second race.

Bowe took advantage of the turn one dramas to sneak his way into second from his fifth-placed starting position.

He then held out advances from Eddie Abelnica following the three-lap Safety Car interruption the XB Falcon driver finishing third to secure his seventh podium finish of the race.

Brett Youlden took advantage of the issues in front to jump to fifth place pressuring Jim Richards in the two-lap dash to the flag in their battle for fourth.

With Miedecke finishing further down the field Richards extended his margin at the top of the TCM series standings following his strong finish.

Mark King finished sixth Andrew Fisher seventh Cameron Mason eighth Tony Karanfilovski ninth and Paul Freestone tenth.

The TCM Mountain Masters presented by ENZED Shannons and Rare Spares continues tomorrow with race two – broadcast live on FOX Sports Motorsport and Network Ten.

The TCM family extends their thoughts of support to Chaz Mostert and the five officials involved in today’s V8 Supercars qualifying accident. Our best wishes to their speedy recovery!
